Fuel mileage decreases when there’s a clogged or failing catalytic converter, exhaust leaks before the oxygen sensors, damaged exhaust piping, or malfunctioning oxygen sensors—disrupt proper exhaust flow and air-fuel mixture feedback, causing the engine to run less efficiently and consume more fuel.
